At the Root of Trump’s Attacks on Europe

Meanwhile, democracy in America has been hollowed out from within, with attacks directed at every branch of the federal government, the media, academia, and the military. Loyalty to the Oval Office now takes precedence over any oath to defend the Constitution — a prerequisite for officials across the United States.

(The Independent) It is now official: Europe is decaying and run by a clique of weak leaders — at least according to Donald Trump’s latest, blistering attack. His reasoning is simple: Europe’s “catastrophic” immigration policies have allowed in “people with entirely different ideologies,” fatally weakening the continent. His outburst comes after the adoption of a new U.S. foreign policy stance that argues Europe faces a “civilizational unraveling” and is already enforcing “censorship of free speech and suppression of opposition.”

These are not unhinged social–media posts from someone deranged in the White House. They are the conclusions of the administration’s top strategists, who have just drafted the 2025 National Security Strategy (NSS) — the official written worldview that everyone in the White House is expected to adopt, and through which they hope to persuade the rest of the world to see things the same way.

“Over time, it is likely that within a few decades, some NATO members will become majority non-European,” the document claims.

This is nonsense. No serious demographic projection suggests that any European nation is on track to become “non-European.” The Trump administration is taking its demographic cues from the Great Replacement Theory, coined by French conspiracy theorist Renaud Camus, which alleges that a “global elite” is plotting to replace Europe’s white population with non-Europeans.

This theory has a cult following among far-right groups, QAnon extremists, and MAGA supporters — and it has now become the long-term official vision of the United States. A vision that will dictate Washington’s relations with the West and the Anglosphere from now on. The U.S. is so alarmed, according to this narrative, that it intends to intervene and force a policy shift in Europe by supporting groups aligned with American politics and undermining those that are not.

“We will oppose elitist, antidemocratic restrictions on core freedoms in Europe, the Anglosphere, and the rest of the democratic world, especially among our allies,” the NSS states.

The Trump administration is waging a political battle against Europe’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires major tech companies — notably U.S.–based firms like Meta, Apple, and Google — to moderate harmful content, remove illegal material, and curb disinformation.

The White House has accused European governments of “censorship” for attempting to regulate companies that generate huge profits while resisting costly compliance measures.

Vice President JD Vance is widely believed to be the principal architect of the new doctrine. Its content mirrors the aggressive attacks he launched on NATO and European democracy during his first official visit to the continent in February. Even then, he openly praised far-right groups and parties.

“America encourages its political allies in Europe to promote this revival of spirit, and the growing influence of patriotic European parties is truly a cause for optimism,” the new NSS declares.

Another unmistakable influence on this document is Vladimir Putin. His regime has become a reference point for many far-right figures and Christian evangelicals aligned with Trump. Putin’s claims to represent traditional, white Christian values have made him a magnet for Great Replacement adherents.

Trump has supported Russia at every turn since returning to office. He has positioned himself against European military aid to Kyiv and against arguments suggesting that Ukraine could drive out Russian forces if given proper assistance. He has cut off all aid except intelligence support and has demanded that the U.S. and American companies receive 50% of profits from any future peace deal for Ukraine.

Central to Putin’s long-term strategy is the dismantling of Western diplomatic alliances and their cohesion. Brexit was a major step in that direction; Trump’s re-election is another. Like Trump, Putin seeks to amplify disinformation and sow distrust within Western civil societies while claiming that governments — such as Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration — are illegitimate and undemocratic.

The NSS document even argues that regarding Ukraine, “A large European majority desires peace, but this desire does not translate into policy, largely because democratic processes in those countries have been subverted by their governments.”

Meanwhile, democracy in the United States is being hollowed out, with attacks launched on all branches of federal authority, the press, academia, and the military. Loyalty to the Oval Office now outweighs any oath to uphold the Constitution — a condition increasingly imposed on officials across the nation.
