Apple has introduced a major innovation for its users in the US: the ability to create a “Digital ID” in the Apple Wallet app, based on US passport data. This feature is available for iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26.1 and for Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 26.1. To use it, Face ID or Touch ID, active Bluetooth, an Apple Account and a US passport are required. The process involves scanning the photo page of the passport, reading its digital chip and taking a selfie for verification.
As an added security measure, users must follow certain facial gestures during setup. Once created, the Digital ID can be used for identity and age verification at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 U.S. airports.
However, Apple emphasizes that this is not a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel. In the future, Apple plans to expand the use of “Digital ID” for identity verification to stores, apps, and websites that support the feature. According to the company, “Digital ID” data is stored encrypted, without the need for users to hand over or unlock their device. This new feature builds on the existing driver’s license feature in Wallet, which is currently available in 12 US states and Puerto Rico.
