Australia sued for violating free speech after banning children’s social media

The website Reddit filed a lawsuit in Australia’s highest court on Friday seeking to overturn the country’s ban on social media for children, calling the move an interference with free speech, Reuters reported on Friday.

The San Francisco-based company, which counts Australia among its largest markets, said in a Supreme Court filing that the ban should be declared invalid because it interferes with the free communication guaranteed by the country’s constitution.
This lawsuit is the second to be filed in a short time, following that of two teenagers last month.

Reddit’s success could open the door for other platforms to face similar challenges.
Australia has banned access to social media for children and young people under the age of 16.
Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Snapchat, Kick, Twitch, TikTok, Reddit and YouTube are among the platforms required to comply with the new legislation.
