“It could cause 1 billion deaths,” Bill Gates calls for laws to strictly control AI

American billionaire Bill Gates has issued a dire warning about Artificial Intelligence, saying the technology could lead to the extinction of humanity. “Artificial Intelligence is certainly powerful enough to trigger events that could kill a billion people. There has never been a more powerful weapon than combining people with bad intentions with the latest AI tools,” Gates said.

In an interview with NBC, Gates called on the US Congress to pass strict laws that define how this technology works. “We need to get law enforcement and politicians involved in the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like,” Bill Gates said.

In an August op-ed, Gates called AI the most disruptive technology in history. The tech mogul warned that it could be the worst source of injustice and that at its current pace, the odds are high that it will have a negative outcome. Other world leaders, including Pope Leo XIV, have expressed similar concerns about the dire consequences for humanity.
