The United States has spent more than $47 billion on the war with Iran, more than 25% more than the War Department’s previous estimate, according to Pentagon data obtained by Reuters.
According to the latest estimate, more than $29 billion is needed to replace spent ammunition, while more than $6 billion is needed for lost military equipment, including aircraft and drones. In July, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth estimated the cost of the conflict at $37,5 billion. Meanwhile, damage to US military bases from Iranian attacks does not appear to have been fully included in this calculation.
The conflict, launched in February by the United States and Israel, has also contributed to rising global energy costs.
The war and its aftermath are increasing political pressure on the Trump administration ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. According to US officials quoted by Reuters, the Pentagon is preparing for the possibility of resuming intensive fighting, if ordered to do so by President Trump.
