According to forecasts, in 2025 the United States will have a negative migration balance of minus 650 thousand people, while in 2026 this number is expected to be minus 120 thousand. This is the first time in half a century that the US has faced such a trend, where departures exceed arrivals.
The findings come from a joint study by Wendy Edelberg and Tara Watson of the Brookings Institution (a center-left think tank) and Stan Veuger of the American Enterprise Institute. According to the researchers, this unprecedented shift in migration trends is attributable to the Trump administration’s tougher immigration policies.
