Paris summit ends, Scholz reveals what was discussed

As negotiations between the US and Russia are taking their first steps in Riyadh, at the emergency Paris summit, called by French President Emmanuel Macron, major European leaders have sought cooperation with the US to realize the peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

After the summit ended, in a statement to reporters, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed that support for Ukraine must continue, adding that no diktats can be imposed on Ukraine, reports the Reuters news agency.

He says that if European countries spend more than 2% of GDP on defense, Germany considers that this should not be part of the EU budget limits.

Scholz said, among other things, that Germany will continue to invest in military spending, and that it should be more flexible with its budgetary rules. Scholz hopes that Europe and the United States will work together and considers it inappropriate to discuss sending troops now.

“There should be no division of security and responsibility between Europe and the US,” Scholz told reporters after holding an emergency European summit in Paris.

“In other words, NATO functions on the fact that we always act together and share the risk, and thus guarantee security. This should not be questioned,” Scholz said, among other things.
