Serwer: With Vucic and the Russians, there is always a risk of escalation in Kosovo

Professor at Johns Hopkins University, Daniel Serwer, has said that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic no longer has the support of the West that he once had.

“He has clearly returned from Moscow and Beijing,” Serwer told Radio Free Europe.

Regarding the months-long protests against Vučić’s government, Serwer says the Serbian president has no one to blame but himself.

“Vučić has no one to blame but himself,” he says.

Commenting on the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the protests in Serbia, Serwer also states that Moscow will put pressure on Vučić to suppress the protests.

“With Vučić and the Russians, there is always a risk of escalation or distraction by another destabilizing incident in Kosovo,” he says when asked if there is a risk of escalation and impact on Regional stability.

Serwer sees the protests in Serbia as “a sincere sign of popular dissatisfaction with the government’s performance,” but says the demonstrators do not appear to have created a clear political alternative. (REL)
