Two AI systems have managed to self-replicate without human intervention, each creating a copy of itself. A result that, if reconfirmed by other data at a later time, could mark the crossing of a red line, which is one that machines and technologies should never cross.
The results were published online on the arXiv platform by Fudan University in Shanghai, which collects articles that must be subject to peer review. In this case, the study showed the capacity of two AI systems to replicate at least 10 tests performed.
Both systems have shown to be able to self-clone in 50% and 90% of cases, respectively. However, the final word belongs to other research groups that will test and verify their replication potential.
