OpenAI has unveiled the latest and much-anticipated version of ChatGPT, GPT-5, saying the chatbot has PhD-level expertise, writes the BBC. Called “smarter, faster and more useful”, OpenAI chief Sam Altman said the new model is a new era for ChatGPT. “I think having something like GPT-5 would be unimaginable in any other era of human history,” he said on Thursday. Recently, Elon Musk also made similar statements about his chatbot, Grok, saying it was “better at everything than a PhD” and calling it “the smartest AI in the world.”
On the other hand, Altman said the new model would have fewer fabricated and incorrect answers. OpenAI is also promoting GPT-5 as a more efficient assistant for coders.
The company has touted the chatbot’s ability to create programs in its entirety and demonstrate better reasoning skills with answers that show work, logic and inference. It has been trained to be more honest and give more accurate answers, it says, while appearing more human. Altman says the model is “significantly better” than its predecessors. “GPT-3 felt like I was talking to a high school student…4 like I was talking to a college student. GPT-5 is the first time I’ve felt like I’m talking to an expert in any field, an expert with a PhD,” he said. But critics say GPT-5 may not deliver as many benefits as its marketing suggests.
It could even bridge the gap between AI’s capabilities and ours to guide it in the way people expect. However, only time will tell if GPT-5 is really as good as Sam Altman claims.
