Tech giants Samsung and Google have officially unveiled their new augmented and virtual reality device, the Galaxy XR, entering the race to dominate the computer glasses market. The new device aims to compete directly with Apple’s Vision Pro, but at a significantly lower price. The Galaxy XR will be available initially in the United States for around $1,800, compared to the Vision Pro which costs over $3,500. The device runs on a customized version of the Android operating system, and also includes Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence assistant.
The Galaxy XR glasses are equipped with cameras that capture the surrounding environment and display it on screens in front of the user’s eyes, combining physical reality with digital objects. They also offer experiences similar to VR glasses, allowing the user to immerse themselves in artificial worlds through an intuitive interface.
In terms of design, the Galaxy XR uses a plastic frame, unlike the Vision Pro’s aluminum material. The device does not simulate the eye area on the front of the glasses, a feature that Apple has integrated to increase the sensation of eye contact in some situations. Apple introduced the Vision Pro in February 2024, and recently launched a new model with a more powerful chip. However, due to its high price, the Vision Pro has remained mainly a product for professionals in fields such as design, medicine and technological development. Early demonstrations of the Galaxy XR show that the main functions are very similar to those of the Vision Pro, positioning the Samsung and Google device as a more affordable alternative for users looking for advanced technology without exceeding the budget.
