IMPORTANT DATES AFTER NOVEMBER 5: When is Donald Trump sworn in as the new US president?

Donald Trump has become the second US president to regain the reins of the White House, following his sweeping victory over rival Kamala Harris. Despite his clear dominance in both the House of Representatives and the popular vote, the road to his inauguration as the 47th president of the United States and his formal inauguration is still long. What are the “stationary” dates until his inauguration?

VERIFICATION OF ELECTION RESULTS. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, there are different dates by which governments must certify vote counts in their states. For example, this process in the states of Arizona and Michigan will take place on November 25, Georgia on November 22 and Wisconsin on December 1.

MEETING OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Under US law, Electoral College votes are usually required to be counted on the second Monday in December, which this year falls on December 17. There, the electors of each state officially vote for president and vice president. The results are sent to Congress for counting.

CERTIFICATION OF VOTES BY CONGRESS. On January 6, Congress meets to count and certify the votes of the Electoral College. Once the results are verified, the new president’s victory is now official.

OATH OF THE NEW PRESIDENT. At noon on January 20, the new president and vice president will be sworn in in Washington.
