Instagram is ending full privacy in Direct Messages and is warning users to download personal messages and photos to avoid them being seen by others.
The company Meta has announced that Instagram’s private messages with end-to-end encryption will be officially removed on May 8, 2026.
This technical change will affect the privacy of millions of users, whose conversations have been inaccessible to third parties, including the platform’s ‘parent’ company itself.
Meta advises users who have existing conversations to follow the on-screen instructions to download media and archives before the deadline, warning that older versions of the app will no longer support this feature.
Why is this happening and what will change?
Meta has not provided a full list of internal reasons for this decision, but confirms that after May 8, 2026, support for this particular encryption will disappear from the Instagram interface.
For users, this means that conversations will no longer be 100% private and the platform may have technical access to their content, a significant change from the current system that keeps messages private even to Meta itself.
