It’s been nearly two years since Ford announced it would cancel its three-row electric SUV. The company was supposed to launch the three-row SUV in 2025, but consumers just weren’t buying electric cars like the company had hoped. Instead, the Dearborn-based automaker abandoned the project before an official debut, but it didn’t go away entirely. Doug Field, Ford’s former head of electric vehicles, posted a photo of the model on his LinkedIn page as the cover image, which has apparently been out since last year.
It shows the profile of the three-row SUV, which has a front end similar to the Genesis GV60, an extra-long, sloping roofline, and a truncated rear end reminiscent of the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe. Ford first introduced the three-row SUV in May 2023. At the time, the company’s CEO, Jim Farley, called it “a personal bullet train” and was supposed to have more than 350 miles of range. Ford didn’t give much more about the electric vehicle beyond that before shutting down the project. The electric vehicle now serves only as a “research tool” that is “informing” the next generation of electric vehicles, according to a Ford spokesperson, who confirmed to The Drive that the vehicle is the canceled three-row SUV. In late 2025, Ford announced a new strategy that would expand its hybrid offerings, with nearly every model set to feature some type of high-energy powertrain by the end of the decade.
It also revealed that the next-generation F-150 Lightning will become an extended-range electric vehicle with an integrated generator. That doesn’t mean Ford has given up on electric vehicles altogether — the automaker is moving toward a new Universal EV platform designed to support several affordable models. The first will be a midsize pickup truck, with an architecture flexible enough to accommodate a range of body styles. Ford says the new electric truck will go on sale sometime in 2027. Then we’ll know just how much the three-row SUV is shaping up to be in Ford’s future.
