Violent protests could push Italy towards early elections

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is considering the possibility of resigning in March, immediately after the European Council summit expected to be held in Rome, according to a report by the prestigious Italian newspaper “La Repubblica”.

The scenario is said to have been discussed during Meloni’s recent meetings with her coalition partners, Antonio Tajani, Matteo Salvini and Maurizio Lupi. However, there has been no official confirmation of such a decision so far.

The European summit in Rome, planned in the framework of the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, could mark Meloni’s last major international engagement before a possible political move.

Italy has also been engulfed by a massive wave of protests in the country’s main cities, with citizens filling the streets and squares.

According to the Italian newspaper, after this meeting, the prime minister could submit her resignation, paving the way for constitutional procedures that could lead to the dissolution of Parliament and the holding of early elections.

The earliest date mentioned for the elections is May 16, 2027, while another scenario envisages the parliamentary elections taking place in June, simultaneously with the local elections.
Such a solution would enable the merging of the two electoral processes and holding the votes several months before the end of the current parliamentary term, which ends in the fall of 2027.

Despite these discussions, the leaders of the right-wing ruling coalition continue to publicly declare that the parliamentary elections will be held according to the usual calendar.
